Sentricon vs Termidor: What the Labels Say

Sentricon is an in-ground bait station system designed to eliminate subterranean termite colonies, while Termidor is a non-repellent liquid termiticide applied directly into the soil surrounding a home. Choosing between Sentricon and Termidor is really choosing between a bait system and a liquid chemical barrier, because state field trials show no performance difference among leading bait brands. What is left to compare is what each label commits a company to, and what the published trials found.

What is the difference between Sentricon and Termidor?

Sentricon is a brand name for an in-ground termite bait system, whereas Termidor is a brand name for a liquid termiticide concentrate applied to soil.

Corteva Agriscience manufactures Sentricon. In its current Always Active setup, technicians install plastic stations around a building’s perimeter with Recruit HD bait pre-loaded inside each unit as an ongoing bait system.

BASF Corporation manufactures Termidor SC. A pest control technician dilutes the liquid concentrate in water and applies it to trenches or drilled holes along a foundation to form a liquid barrier treatment.

What is inside noviflumuron and fipronil, and how do they kill termites?

Recruit HD uses noviflumuron to stop immature termites from moulting, while Termidor uses fipronil, which termites cannot detect and pick up as they tunnel through treated soil.

Recruit HD bait contains 0.5 per cent noviflumuron. NC State Extension explains that noviflumuron is an insect growth regulator that prevents successful moulting in immature termites. Because foraging workers share food with the rest of the nest through shared feeding, a process detailed on my page about subterranean termites, halting the development of immature workers starves the queen, king, and soldiers until the colony collapses.

Termidor SC uses fipronil at finished dilutions of 0.06, 0.09, or 0.125 per cent, with one gallon of concentrate containing 0.8 pounds of fipronil. UC IPM explains that modern active ingredients like fipronil are non-repellent, meaning termites cannot detect the chemical in the soil. They tunnel through the treated zone, pick up a lethal dose, and die.

University of Kentucky Entomology notes that non-repellent soil products tend to be the most reliable liquid option available. Kentucky lists Termidor and Taurus (fipronil), Premise (imidacloprid), and Altriset (chlorantraniliprole) as current examples of this non-repellent category.

What do the Recruit HD and Termidor labels require from a pest control company?

The Recruit HD label requires station placement at maximum 20-foot intervals and inspections at least every 15 months, while the Termidor SC label requires applying 4 gallons of finished liquid per 10 linear feet per foot of depth.

Corteva’s Recruit HD label (EPA Reg. No. 62719-608) sets clear operational limits that you can hold a pest control firm to:

  • Stations must be installed around the perimeter at intervals not exceeding 20 feet where soil access allows.
  • The structure must be assigned an annual inspection date, with service provided on at least an annual basis.
  • No more than 15 months may elapse between inspections.
  • Inspection and servicing may be suspended during periods when the local historical average daily temperature drops below 50°F.
  • The bait system may be used as a standalone alternative to a pre-construction liquid chemical barrier on new buildings.

BASF’s Termidor SC label (EPA Reg. No. 7969-210) regulates liquid volume and trenching depths:

  • The standard application rate requires 4 gallons of finished dilution per 10 linear feet per foot of depth, a standard I break down on my liquid barrier treatment service page.
  • The 0.06 per cent concentration covers typical prevention and control, while 0.09 and 0.125 per cent dilutions are designated for severe infestations, problem soils, or difficult construction types.
  • Soil cannot be treated below the bottom of the footing.

What do independent field trials show about Sentricon vs Termidor?

A two-year field evaluation by the California Structural Pest Control Board found no significant performance differences among leading bait systems, with average time to attack ranging from 327 to 383 days across all brands tested.

California researchers Andrew Sutherland and Siavash Taravati evaluated 180 bait stations across three commercial systems: Sentricon with Recruit HD, Trelona Advance, and Exterra. By the end of the two-year project period the overall station hit rate was 44 per cent, and the average interception time was 367 days. In the Board’s own trial, Sentricon showed no significant performance advantage over Trelona or Exterra.

The trial also demonstrated strong protective results. Across 15 occupied research homes with active subterranean termite colonies adjacent to the foundations, none became infested during the two-year study, and no colony recovered from a bait station was ever detected again by DNA analysis, which the researchers took to mean those colonies had been eliminated. The researchers also noted that timing matters: stations installed in early winter (December 16) were found by termites in an average of 194 days, compared to 296 days for stations installed in early summer (June 24).

When it comes to speed and colony impact, the two products deliver different outcomes:

  • A 2024 University of Florida study by Thomas Chouvenc found that liquid soil treatments impact as little as 1.5 per cent of a subterranean termite colony’s overall population, leaving the surrounding population intact underground.
  • NC State Extension and University of Kentucky Entomology emphasize that bait systems act slowly, often requiring several months or even years to eliminate a colony.
  • NC State notes there is no way to predict when termites will find an underground station, though the California trial recorded three stations attacked within 60 days and ten within 120 days.
  • Where large native populations or invasive Formosan subterranean termites exist, colony elimination through baiting offers a structural advantage over temporary liquid barriers.

Can you put Sentricon bait stations in soil treated with Termidor?

Bait stations installed close to soil treated with a non-repellent liquid may sit where termites will not go, because the published avoidance zone is far wider than the label’s minimum separation.

The Recruit HD label explicitly states that where a structural foundation is known to have been previously treated with a soil-applied termiticide, stations must not be installed closer than 18 inches from the foundation.

However, a 2024 University of Florida study found that non-repellent liquid termiticides create a “death zone” extending up to 2.56 meters, or 8 feet 4 inches, from the treatment area. Entomologist Thomas Chouvenc explained that while liquid termiticides are non-repellent in formulation, early mortality makes them functionally repellent in application. Foraging termites avoid the area containing dead nest mates due to the smell of decay.

This creates a practical problem for combination treatments. Placing bait stations inside that 8-foot zone may negate the termites’ ability to reach the stations. This remains an open research question, and it is the single best technical question you can ask a salesperson who proposes installing both products on your house at the same time.

Who funded the research on Sentricon and Termidor?

The University of Florida conducted the liquid study where Sentricon was originally developed, while chemical manufacturers supplied equipment and paid research stipends to operators in the California bait trial.

The 2024 research highlighting the repelling effect of liquid barriers came out of the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center. That same university was the original research institution where the Sentricon baiting system was developed.

In the California Structural Pest Control Board trial, participating pest control operators received stations, baits, service equipment and in some cases training from the manufacturers, Corteva, BASF and Ensystex. The project itself, rather than the manufacturers, paid those operators a research stipend for each home each year.

Neither funding arrangement invalidates the published data. However, knowing who funded each evaluation allows you to weigh the results with full context before accepting a commercial proposal.

What can a brand comparison between Sentricon and Termidor not tell you?

A brand comparison cannot tell you your total ongoing contract costs or guarantee the workmanship of the technician applying the product.

NC State Extension notes that annual contract renewals for bait systems typically cost two to four times more than renewals for liquid treatments. This price gap exists because bait stations require regular monitoring visits, whereas liquid barriers are inspected annually. NC State entomologists explicitly state that because liquid and bait treatments work so differently, comparing which works better is difficult, and university product descriptions do not constitute an endorsement of one brand over another. Homeowners must evaluate the initial treatment fee alongside the ongoing terms of their termite bond.

Furthermore, brand names do not overcome poor application work:

  • NC State notes that no chemical treatment of either type is 100 per cent effective every time.
  • The EPA reminds homeowners that firms offering termite services must be licensed by the state and advises asking to see a current license.
  • Understanding how to vet a pest control company matters far more than selecting a brand name, because an incomplete liquid barrier or incorrectly spaced bait line will fail regardless of whether the chemical is made by Corteva or BASF.

Which termite treatment would I choose for my own home?

I would decide this on the house and the timetable, and let the brand follow from that rather than the other way round.

Without seeing your house or reading your specific quotes, my recommendation is to choose the treatment method that fits your property rather than the brand name on the bid.

If the house takes a liquid application without difficulty and there is an active infestation to stop, the liquid is doing the job it is good at, and the brand on the drum matters less than whether the applied volume matches the label. If slabs, patios, a well or the foundation itself make a liquid application awkward or unlawful, a bait system is the one that can be installed at all, and the question to settle before signing is the renewal rather than the installation. Neither of those answers is a brand, which is the honest end of a brand comparison.

Is Sentricon better than Termidor?

They are not the same kind of product, so the comparison people want is not available. One is a bait system aimed at the colony and the other is a liquid applied to soil around the building. What is actually in each product?

Their labels say. Recruit HD requires inspection and service at least annually, with no more than fifteen months allowed to elapse between inspections, and servicing may pause when the local historical average daily temperature falls below 50°F. Termidor's label sets application rates rather than a visit schedule, and NC State says liquid-treated houses are typically inspected annually. Ask for the inspection schedule in writing either way.

Can a company install bait stations on a house that already had a liquid treatment?

Yes, and the Recruit HD label sets one condition: where the foundation is known to have been treated with a soil-applied termiticide, stations must not go closer than 18 inches to the foundation. The 2024 University of Florida study found termites avoid an area extending up to 8 feet 4 inches around a non-repellent liquid treatment, and its author says that may stop them reaching the stations.

Does the brand decide whether the treatment works?

Less than the company does. NC State says no chemical termite treatment, liquid or bait, is 100 per cent effective every time, and Kentucky says baits will not work by hammering stations into the ground and walking away. EPA says firms offering termite services must be licensed by your state and that you should ask to see the licence. The California trial also found many of its sites carried three to five separate colonies, and one carried fifteen.
