Your state is on neither list
Then VA does not require one. Their wording is direct: only states requiring an inspection appear on the page, and if a state is not listed, a wood-destroying insect inspection is not required unless specific issues are noted in the VA appraisal report. That last clause is doing real work. An appraiser who sees evidence at the property can trigger the requirement anywhere.

What this tool cannot tell you
- It is about VA loans and nothing else. A conventional loan, an FHA loan or a cash purchase is a different question, and so is what your state requires of a seller.
- It is not a risk map. VA's list follows termite probability, but a county being absent is a statement about VA's lending rules, not about whether termites live there. Termites are found in every state except Alaska.
- It cannot tell you whether your particular purchase needs one. Your lender's closing instructions and your contract can both require a report VA does not.
- It does not price anything. VA's circular on this authorises charging the veteran and prints no amount.
How this list was built
It is copied, whole, from one page: VA's Local Requirements, VA Home Loans (Wood-Destroying Insect Information to be considered prior to the issuance of the VA Notice of Value), read on 2026-08-09. VA says the same requirements appear in VA Lenders Handbook, Chapter 12, Section 33. A work of the United States government carries no copyright, so reproducing it here is straightforward. I have added no state, no county and no interpretation of who is at risk.
Two states are deliberately missing, and it is worth knowing why. VA's page also holds county lists for Michigan and New Hampshire, but both sit inside an HTML comment, which means VA has switched them off rather than deleted them. They are not live content, so they are not reproduced here. Anything that scrapes that page without stripping comments will publish a requirement VA has withdrawn.
What this is not. The Termite Infestation Probability map that sits behind VA's rule is a figure in the International Residential Code, published as an image with no machine-readable version and no reuse licence. I will not turn a picture into ZIP codes by eye and present the result as data, so this page answers the question VA answers in writing instead.
